Makeup Speech Analysis:
President Woodrow Wilson Requests a Declaration of War Against Germany.
In President Woodrow Wilson speech, he explains that the americans have no quarrel with the german people and that they have no feeling towards them but one of sympathy and frienship, but with the government decisions of entering this war. Wilson also explains that we are not in this for revenge, or to exercise or physical power, “but only the vindication of right, of human right, of which we are only a single champion.”
Makeup Mindtools blog:
Billy Sunday "God's Worst Enemy" & Will Rogers "Wets and the drys"
In Billy Sunday speech, he states that the saloon is a coward. It is a thief and that the saloon is a liar because it promises good cheer and sends sorrow. It promises happiness and sends misery. He preaches about the effects of using alcohol.
In Will Rogers radio program speech, he speaks about his thoughts on prohibition. He's thoughts about prohibition that if it was repealed or never repealed that the country would drag along drag along just the same.
Marcus Garvey Finds Common Ground with the Ku Klux Klan.
In Marcus Garvey speech he talks about the meeting that he had with the Ku Klux Klan and sees the vision of what the KKK main purpose was. He wanted his people to understand and wanted peace for his people and as well with others.
Abolition of Povery
Herbert Hoover speaks about poverty and about our government. He speaks about that the people have the right to know whether ew can continue to solve our great problems without abandeonment of our american system and wanting to restore hope in the american people.
Makeup Toulmin Method:
President Woodrow Wilson Requests a Delaration of War Against Germany.
CLAIM: The Hostile attack on the British oceanliner Lusitania and several american ships being sunk by german U-Boats.
THE QUALIFIER: Several American Ships Being sunk by German U-Boats.
REASON #1: “American ships have been sunk, American lives taken in ways which it has stirred us very deeply to learn of, but the ships and people of other neutral and friendly nations have been sunk and overwhelmed in the waters in the same way.”
REASON #2: "We are accepting this challenge of hostile purpose because we know that in such a government, following such methods, we can never have a friend; and that in the presence of it orgainzed power, always lying in wait to accomplish we know not what purpose, there can be no assured security for the democratic governments of the world"
Makeup Speech Analysies
a Firsthand Account of the Violent Crackdown in Tiananmen Square, China.
now, when first reading this is i was SEMI shocked just based on the brutality aspect of it, but i am good now. so, this is me trying to turn a frown upside down: there was a nonviolent peace protest, things got outta hand soldiers killed innocents and innocents hurt and i think killed some soldiers. through the whole time reading this i thought of this one quote that i think may or may not fit this...
"if you want peace, prepare for war" - the Punisher.
Bush Announces the Allied Air Attack on Saddam Hussein's Forces in Iraq and Kuwait.
so this one is Bush giving a logical and i guess repective reason for getting into another countries business based on how this lead up to this day it all worked out... no one wanted it, but we stopped a bad man at the cost of our own lives and many other ones. this one reminds me of a quote as well... once again not quite sure if it fits.
"At last, you know what it means to hate, now you're ready to be a king." - from Braveheart.
to be continued...
Du Bois… “Battle for Humanity” & Booker t. Washington… More Harm than Good.
I like how these two speeches are next to each other, to different views. Du Bois goes for the “fight for your right” aspect while Washington goes for the “can’t fight fire with fire” aspect. Both remind me of a quote…( I will be giving a quote for every speech so feel free to skip ahead)
“There was a moment... when I used to blame everything and everyone... for all the pain and suffering and vile things that happened to me, that I saw happen to my people. Used to blame everybody. Blamed white people, blamed society, blamed God. I didn't get no answers 'cause I was asking the wrong questions. You have to ask the right questions… Has anything you've done made your life better?” – Bob Sweeney, American History X
Mark Twain…on Smoking, Drinking, and Lying.
This may just be me but Twain doesn’t seem like he wants to give this speech… idk tho. So, Twain tells them to not smoke, drink, or marry in excess. Then it all leads up to him saying they can all lead honest lifes which he himself takes part in. hers’ the quote…
“There's right and there's right and never the twain shall meet.” H.I. Raising Arizona
Ida B. Wells-Barnett… Lynching and “Mob Murder” in America.
So, Wells tells us how one situation or person can totally mess up the greater good. How mob mentality never acts within reason and how we all should have the same rights. All who break the law should be punished.
Chief Plenty Coup… the Great Tribes of the United states.
Great speech about… all the tribes coming to together for one last council, putting away their differences, their past, their hate… just for the sake of life… to say “farewell as brothers, never to meet again.”
The Reverend Reverdy Ransom… Between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries.
At the time this was a HUGE deal, but now a days no one even notices… which is good. People assumed that whoever won this fight, that their race would be supreme. We all know that’s not the case but in 1910… they didn’t know no better.
Toastmasters Extra Credit:
Three Techniques for Becoming More Productive at Work
Natalie Conrad was the speaker and she talked about how to organize at work, control your e-mail, and prioritize your workload. The class is for entrepreneurs and those who want to be more efficient and improve office productivity. Orlando, Brianna, and I attended the class. It was very educational. The Speaker Natalie Conrad spoke about the Three techniques for becoming more productive at work. She mentions about tips on how to organize and prioritize your workspace. Also, she gave some interesting facts that 80% of what we file we will never use again and that 41% of the day in the office is spent checking email. Then she talks about the 4D concept about emails in the workspace. These 4D's are Delete, Do it, Delegate it(Pass the email along to the proper dept), and defer it.
The Speaker spoke about planning your week and organizing your daily goals and prioritize them and to have one common calender planner for everything. She mentions in her speech that when we have multiple calender planners. For example, a PDA, Weekly planner, etc. That it gets confusing after awhile due to the fact that some information that is needed is scattered all over. So, by limiting it to one, helps you better organize and be more productive. She talks about a website where you can go to help you stay on top of things. The website is www.jott.com. The link that I have just provided helps set reminders, list, and appointment by converting your voice into emails and text messages as a quick reminder.
Even though, it was not a class for speech techniques or tips. But I believe that I can use the methods that she spoke about to organize and prioritize material for speech class.
Overall, the class and speech was great. So, I just had to critique her speech.

Extra Credit: Border’s Live Classes
This past Tuesday Orlando, Lai, and myself attended a Border’s live class in Roseville. The topic of this class was organizing your life and your work space. Natalie was the speaker who presented us with a lot of useful information and facts. For example; 80% of what we file we never use again. We also learned the three types of files. 1. Active files; the ones we use everyday. 2. Reference files; the ones we use two to three times a week. 3. Archive files; the files we use yearly or not that often. One good thing I learned from this class is that multi-tasking is bad. The more we multi-task the more likely it is to have memory loss. She used the example of the light switch. Every time we switch to a different activity the light switch turns off, then on again when you go back to the other activity. A productive way that we were taught to keep our lives and work place organized and together, is to have one main calendar for yourself and a family calendar so everyone can write down events that are going on. We also learned that 41% of our day is spent checking our e-mail. Keeping folders in your e-mail account is necessary to keeping organized. Creating e-mail purge days will keep your in-box to a minimum. I learned that there is a very useful tool that helps you remind yourself of important things you need to remember. Jott.com is a website that you can send yourself reminders. There is also a number on the website that you can call to send a reminder to yourself on your e-mail and to your phone.

P.72 Marcus Garvey.
He spoke about his meeting with the KKK group and discussed their similarities and interests for America. Mr. Garvey wanted the Blacks to stay in Africa and the KKK wanted America to stay pure and free of a mixed race. They both wanted peace between the races. And they both wanted America to be right in their eyes.
Preacher Billy Sunday;
He talks about how the saloons are evil and non-God like. They bring nothing but bad things and harm to our country
Toulmin Method/ Makeup Blog
I’ve decided to talk about President Woodrow Wilson’s request for a Declaration of war Against Germany.
The claim is that the United States as a nation must act upon Germany not for the gratification of dominance, but to maintain the freedom and rights it has worked so hard to establish and help all nations be made safe for democracy.
The qualifier is that President Wilson called congress to session to ask for a declaration of war against Germany when because German U-boats sank several American ships.
An example of an exception is “We have no quarrel with the German people. We have no feeling towards them but of sympathy and friendship. It was not upon their impulse that their government acted in entering this war.” The United States doesn’t have a problem with German people, but once their government tried to test our nation, they got the attention they asked for.
The first reason that demonstrates America is not out for dominance is “ Our motive will not be for revenge or the victorious assertion of the physical might of the nation, but only the vindication of right, of human right, of which we are only a single champion…” The United States has entered this situation with the intentions of discontinuing the actions of those who forgot that freedom and personal rights in life, established by democracy, are what truly bring happiness.
“We are glad, now that we see the facts with no veil of false pretense about them, to fight thus for the ultimate peace of the world and for the liberation of its peoples, the German peoples included, for the right of nations, great and small, and the privilege of men everywhere to choose their way of life and of obedience. “ This can be a second example of the United States motives and ultimate goal to better mankind, rather than conquer and dominate a nation
Mind Tools/ Makeup Blog
Preacher Billy Sunday and Will Rogers
Preacher Billy Sunday starts off talking about people’s “personal liberty” and having the freedom of being able to walk into a bar and walk out sloppy drunk, is something that is not only a danger to yourself, but others. How people have done things that in his eyes can only be influenced by the devil, all under their personal liberties, all from saloons. He then starts to talk about saloons as establishments, and how they are a decay to our society by saying this such as “It will steal the milk from the breast of the mother and leave her with nothing with which to feed her infant.” On the contrary, Will Rogers, a radio show host who decided to answer fans requests and speak on the subject had a completely different point of view. He pretty much feels that Americans are going to do what they want to do anyways, and they are going to drink or not drink, regardless of what the law says. “The real wet is going to drink, I don’t care what your laws are, and a real dry is going to lecture to him while he is drinking…” Rogers basically feels like there are bigger things in life to worry about than this.
Marcus Garvey
Marcus Garvey, an advocate of Negro rights and Negro liberty speaks about his feelings on the Ku Klux Klan. The mentality of the Ku Klux Klan is one of purity, and they feel that anyone not like themselves, do not belong in their society. Having the South being heavily populated by Ku Klux Klan members, African-Americans faced some of the most violent acts committed by the Klan. Marcus Garvey does not agree with what the Ku Klux Klan does, but he recognizes a common ground with the general idea behind their actions. He himself feels that Africa should be an all black country, and African Americans should be there, and proud to be united with their original heritage.
William Jennings Bryan and Dudley Malone
This was a trial between the state of Tennessee and John T. Scopes, Scoped was on trial for violating the Butler Act, which suggests that any school funded by the state of Tennessee is not to teach any theory that denies divine creation as defined by the Bible.
There’s no denying Scopes is most likely guilty of contradicting the Bible and suggesting the theory of evolution. Bryan seemed to have an obvious argument and being a fundamentalist Christian himself, he had a strong position on his religious beliefs which he seems to use as a defence in this case. Dudley Malone, the defence, used a more sensible, scientifical argument to support their case. Malone and Scopes are simply supporting the idea of scientific fact, saying things like “give the next generation all the facts, all the available data, all the theories, all the information that learning, that study, that observation has produced.” They want to simply encourage generations to come to study the teachings of both the Bible and the theory of evolution, in hope that they can make a decision for themselves.
Herbert Hoover
This speech was given by presidential candidate Herbert Hoover talking about economic issues in post-war America. He feels that after traveling around and seeing other countries trying to rebuild their economy, the American system seems to be one that works. Hoover feels that “We have demonstrated that we can meet any economic problem and still maintain our democracy as master in our own house, and that we can at the same time preserve equality of opportunity and individual freedom…” He really seemed to have a good understanding of things which by no surprise he easily won the 1928 presidential election.
Speech Analysis/ Makeup Blog
For this speech I decided to talk about Marcus Garvey and his encounter with the Ku Klux Klan. Garvey was a leader in the black community and advocate of Negro rights and liberty, and accomplished such things as launching the United Negro Improvement Association. This association supported a campaign that encouraged African Americans to create an all black community in Africa. Similar to the ideas of the Ku Klux Klan, Garvey felt that African Americans as a race should be together, just as the Ku Klux Klan thought about the white race in their communities. With the Ku Klux Klan’s reputation for violent acts against African Americans, it’s kind of bizarre to see how an avid Black leader can have the same concept in movements as the Ku Klux Klan. After Garvey meets with some of the Ku Klux Klan members, he definitely feels like there is some kind of common ground behind their thoughts which aim to better improve the own races. Garvey closes his speech with, “So you realize that the United Negro Improvement Association is caring out just what the Ku Klux Klan is carrying out: the purity of the white race down South. And we are going to carry out the purity of the black race not only down South, but all through the world.”
I am making up for the first week of blogs that I had missed. Here are my analysis’ of those speeches.
-Mike Reilly
The speech that was given by Senator George F. Hoar discussed his views about American Imperialism, and how he was against it. His speech focused around the current issue of that time, the United States occupying the Philippines against their will, and the damage that we are causing there. He talks about the ideals, and values that our own country was founded on and how we are going against them. .
The speech by W.E.B. Du Bois (Battle for Humanity) is about asking for an disturbance by the citizens of the United States against the government so as a way of protesting, so that things will be set right.
The speech by Booker T. Washington urged American citizens to paths of non-violence in an attempt help ease vision of African Americans.
The speech by Mark Twain was truly in his style. He gave a rather humorous speech at a graduation to group of young ladies. His lesson was all things in moderation. He also made it a point that honesty, although it is the best policy, it will not always get you what you need.
The speech by Chief Plenty Coup describes desecration of the land that his been of his people. He wanted to meet with the “great tribes of the US” in peace one last time.
This is my makeup speech analysis’ for the second week of speeches.
-Mike Reilly
The speech by President Woodrow Wilson was basically outlining the reasons why we need to go to war with Germany. He made it clear that it was not because of the citizens of the country, but because of the choices that Germany’s Government made (i.e. attacking civilians at sea).
The speech by Carrie Chapman Catt is about women’s suffrage. She makes many valid and logical points in her speech. She poses to her audience these thoughts, women teach young boys in our schools about the government so that when those boys become men they can make wise decisions during the voting process, and they are also lawyers.
The speech by James W. Gerard, Ambassador, is about how our country has impressed him with our allegiance. And how we would also never allow treason to go unpunished.
The speech by Henry Cabot Lodge was on his feelings towards the league of nations why he was against it. In his speech he made it clear that he felt that we as a nation should not include our problems in foreign affairs and that we should remain an independent country. He also pointed out that we should be more worried about our domestic problems before exerting strength to help with international political problems.
This is to make up for the third set of speech analysis’.
-Mike Reilly
The speech by Billy Holiday (God’s worst enemy) talks about the negatives of alcohol. He refers to alcohol as vile brew and to saloons as evil establishments thus driving forward his powerful stance against it. He uses a pathos appeal so as play off the audience’s emotions to win over their interest in the favor of prohibition. He made sure to point out the negatives of the substance (such as, it makes husbands abuse their wives and children, and ruins health. Another reason this is a pathos appeal is because he made all those claims without really any evidence.
The speech by Will Rogers used a logos appeal. He didn’t have a side (or if he did, it was not made clear in his speech). He used reason and logic to make his case, and that was that people who drink (or wets) will always find a way to drink, and people who don’t and are against drinking (or drys) will always lecture those who drink. It something that I believe to very true, and I believe that this speech is a very good example of logos appeal for any student that may be having a hard time understanding the definition.
The speech by Herbert Hoover, “Abolition of poverty” uses a pathos rhetoric style. He is able to appeal the general public and relate with them their love for democracy. He touches on their love for free enterprise and instills with them and sense of national pride.
This is my makeup work for the Toulmin method worksheet,
-Mike Reilly
I chose to do mine on “The Declaration of War against Germany”
By, President Woodrow Wilson
The Claim: Because of attack by germany on non-military people of the United States, we must react with military force.
The Qualifier: German military fleet sank a civilian ship.
The Exceptions: We would not have to have to fight if we could handle this civily
Reason 1: We were attacked, even though we were not posing a threat. This is uncalled for and is in need of retaliation.
The Objection/Rebuttal: We are not supposed to go around and fix all the world’s problems. But I feel that in situations that we are pulled into we should make it our business and get things done.
This is makeup work for the fallacies portion.
-Mike Reilly
The speech by Joseph Strauss (the Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge) I believe had a few fallacies in it. I don’t think he meant for people to take them seriously, but then again, I was not there, and therefore do not know all the circumstances. He uses a lot of description, and makes boastful claims such as the fact the this bridge will enrich the world. I know that it is a very beautiful and convenient piece of architecture, but I don’t see how it will enrich the world economically. I believe that although it is a nice bridge, and is a Californian Icon, I don’t think it is everything he talked it up to be.
Samantha Brick,
Second Speech Analysis:
President Woodrow Wilson Requests a Declaration of War Against Germany:
Wilson describes how the U.S. has tried to stay out of this war through 'Armed Neutrality' but how it is more likely to cause what it is trying to prevent than anything else.
He states that we as a country have nothing against German citizens and know it was not their choice to go to war, or strike against us. He is troubled that he has to act against them (because acting against their government and its citizens is one-in-the-same).
Wilson goes on to say that the U.S. has nothing to gain from this war, and we are not trying to gain anything through this war. Instead, we are just trying to prevent the German government from taking things that don't belong to them. America is trying to stop the threat against democracy and human rights that the German war is trying to destroy.
Wilson acknowledges that other countries we have befriended have been hurt as well, and if we don't stand against the enemy, we will be allowing them to ruin everything great that America stands for.
Analysis of Mary McLeod Bethune Speech Commemorating the sacrifices and achievements of African American Women over the past 100 years using the Toulmin Method.
Claim: The claim is that, “the Negro woman embodies one of the modern miracles of the New World.”
Qualifier: “one of the “ Many more are found in the body but this is the one found in the claim.
Exceptions: None found in the claim, but some can be found in the body text, most of which are implied, simply by stating that the Negro Woman is being discussed excludes any woman of other color, thus it could be implied that no other woman embodies one of the modern miracles of the New World but the Negro Women.
Reason 1: She was quick to the ballets, (paraphrasing).
Relevance: given that the Negro Woman was not able to vote makes the fact that given the opportunity the Negro Women stepped up and seized the chance to vote with fervor.
Effectiveness: Even though they were repressed by the same people that gave them the ability to vote they stepped up and took charge of change and voted, and maintained a sense of patriotism in that fact to vote for what they wanted.
Support: “Oftentimes she has led the struggle toward moral improvement and political record, and has compelled her reluctant brother to follow her determined lead.”
Credible: The evidence is and isn’t credible, it is because history shows a large increase in African American female voting since their ability to do so. However stating that this is to the credit of the Woman’s drive to benefit their race and all of mankind is a bit false. The people were just granted the right to vote, it is a fallacy to think the given the chance they wouldn’t vote and insure their new found freedoms. In addition to say that African American Women led the way to moral improvement and political record is a fallacy of generalization.
Accuracy: The evidence given throughout the essay has historical events that can aid in bestowing credibility to the claim. However the generalization of the reasons create fallacies in the support, so given the level of generalization the claim is a fallacy
Objection: Not all black women helped the cause.
Rebuttal: As a general basis more black women helped than any other color.
Objection: Women of other colors have done copious amounts of good for manhood. Not just Black women.
Rebuttal: No other race has been through the hardships and risen so high as the black women.
