I have no idea where I am suppose to post our blog, so I'm making that step to do it here!

The first speech that I read was from Preacher Billy Sunday on “God’s worst Enemy” wasn’t really appealing to me at all. I don’t drink very much at all and I grew tiresome of the speech. It pretty much sounds like if it was, preaching. It is very one sided and it embellishes the idea on how drinking is the worst of all sins. It becomes really dull as I was reading it. Will Rogers talks about the “Wets” and the “Drys” and he makes good settling comments for both arguments like if he was on the Daily Show. But the facts that he brings up makes the argument about Noah and the vineyard really help blow the dispute out of the water. That felt like if was a good impact to the debate on the prohibition.
Black Leader Marcus Garvey makes a good speech about the “Common Ground”, but what I have a hard time dealing with is his idea. I tried to keep an open mind about the situation on how he wants everyone to get along in a non-violent and peaceful manner, even if it includes them out of the picture. He really does wants to help his own people, but he is leaving himself open to a lot of conflict of interest. But that was the time and era for situation like that to be hesitant about their decisions of the Ku Klux Klan.
In Dudley Field Malone defense speech on the teaching of Darwin’s Theory, he is stating the law facts of Tennessee. Mr. Scopes knew the violated that law and now he is being prosecuted against the state. Dudley made some good points on how it would rob their faith in God and their religion on the creation of man. He also uses the same book that Mr. Scope has to gain factual knowledge and uses it on the field saying that he understands the situation.
Herbert Hoovers speech on “Abolition of Poverty” felt like we had something to look forward to as his speech goes on. Almost like a light at the end of the tunnel where everyone will get a chance when they live in America. What didn’t appeal to me is when he mentions that America is like an “experiment”, meaning to me that you don’t know what the real result would be. Too bad the stock market crashed. It really contradicts his case.
Franklin D Roosevelt presidential speech was really nice on how he convince the public his idea on how he would not let one man get drag behind or the farm workers and the Republicans have some form of equal opportunity. But, the catch is that we need to call to arms to help win the war. It may sound uplifting to some people, but the others might unhappy with that decision.
Sometimes I think that it really helps to get involve into the situation by knowing what side you are on to begin with or knowing what appeals to you the moment you read the title, especially if you already know the results by reading the speeches from the past.

I'm with you, this seems like as good a spot as any for the reading blog.

So the first speech in this weeks reading is "God's Worst Enenmy" by Preacher Billy Holiday. In this speech he attacks both the effects of alcohol on our society and saloons for being the evil establishments who distribute the vile brew. His appeal is a Pathos, focusing on all the terrible things people do when their drinking. He claims it ruins peoples lives by making them abuse their wives and children, as well as robbing them of their money and health. He is basically using fear to pursuade people to hate alchohol.

The next speech is by Will Rogers taking no side in the prohibition debate. Well he did take the side of reason, or Logos by appealing to what he belived to be logical. His arguement was that the wets will always find a way to drink and the drys will always lecture them for it so we might as well accept human nature and move on.

The next speech is an interesting one by black leader Marcus Garvey. In this speech he uses Ethos appeals to find a common ground with the KKK. His open minded justification of the KKK is based on the fact that they are openly proud of their heritage just like many of the black leaders and Marcus seems to repect character of the Imperial Wizard. He approves of the answers he got from the wizard in his speech.

The next Speech is by William Jennings Bryan against the teaching of Darwinism in our schools. I feel that he used both logos and pathos appeals in this speech both appealing to peoples sense of spirituality and their freedom to instill it in thier children as well as the simple reason that whether right or wrong the law in that place and time prohibited the teaching of evolution in public schools.

The last speech is by Herbert Hoover on the "Abolition of poverty" in the US. I feel that this speech employs more of a pathos stance appealing to peoples love for democracy and free enterprise, the roots of our great nation. This stirring of nationalistic pride is to explain the use of government run indutry in a time of war and to ensure that it does not last because it stands to threaten our very ideals as a nation.

“Gods Worst Enemy” vs. “Wets” - ”Drys”
From the reading that I have done on these two arguments what I got is an aggressive debate from Evangelical side and a passive one from Will Rogers. The argument of how much things change from when one drinks and how it affects the life around the individual is a strong argument. Yet, the passive side of why waste our time worrying about issues like so that for which is a social thing that has been going on for a long time. As far back as to Noah’s time, as mentioned by Will Rogers. Is a less thing to worry about and instead one should focus on other important things.

Black Leader Marcus Garvey Finds Common Ground w/ the Ku Klux Klan.
From this reading I was able to get the reasoning behind the debate they had. An interest to find out the reasoning of why such organization exist. The Imperial Wizards mention’s that the organization is form to express to a great extent the feeling of every real white American. He also brought up the subject of how other organizations are made of other groups yet they don’t speak out there thoughts as how the KKK organization does. For the most part, its an argument of self preservation of ones ethnic background and there beliefs of unity for a better/stronger race.

“Theology and Science”
This reading to me talks about the fact that there is information/studies of human evolution taught to kids in schools as part of the curriculum. The argumentative part of this is the fact that many religious individuals feel that such material should be expelled from being apart of the kids study. That why should one believe evolution were there are for most theories and thoughts. Were a bible is the word of god and such evolution does not exist. That we all got created by god, is an argument that will always be debated by the studies and past history of life through scientific evaluations.

“Abolition of Poverty”
The reading on this is not have a mentality were we should consider that our government will solve all of our issues. That if we rely on such mentality our country could possibly suffer by our lake of participation. That our economy and business life should be something we have a part of, and be aware of changes that happen to our Nation. By doing so proves that we can preserve equality of opportunity and individual freedom, as stated in the book.

-The first speech was by Preacher Billy Sunday "Gods worst Enemy". I really wasnt into this speech at all. Im not much of a religious person myself and to me this sounded like something i would hear in church. He spoke about how bad it is to consume or sell alcohol and talks about the effect it has not only on the consumer, but the consumer's family. He refers to saloons as a thief, a liar, and a coward. Gods worst enemy and the devil's best friend. Because of this religious vibe, this speech was unapealing.

-Common ground between Marcus Garvey and the Ku Klux Klan. Upon reading the title i was a bit confused, but as i read the literature it was all made clear. Marcuz Garvey, a black leader, saw the visions of the KKK. He understood their purpose and tried to make others understand as well. He wanted peace for his people as well as peace with others.

-Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
Im with John T. Scopes on this one. I dont beleive children should be limited to there knowledge. The speech had many reasons behind his beleifs. I didnt like how everyone was foced to follow the bibles theory of creation. Nobody should be limited there right to beleive in what they think is true.

-Abolition of Poverty
Hoovers speech was about poverty and talked alot about following our government. He spoke about self-government and how it causes tyrannies, injustices, and destruction within us. he wants to regain power and as the book reads, restore hope and confidence in the american people.

"God's Worst Enemy"
This speech is given by Rev. Billy Sunday and the entire premise is based on his view of alcohol and it's effects on humans. He uses the logos appeal in his opening paragraph when describing "personal liberties", he breakes down these words in their context to describe how men who choose to consume alcohol are not only effecting themselves but also their families and the community at large by their inappropriate conduct while intoxicated. He goes on to describe the behavior and uses a pathos appeal to paint a picture of a wife and children scared of this dangerous man. I did not see any concession in this speech , the speech sounded more like a rant with little proof to back up his view. He defiantly counted on the logos and pathos appeal to do the work for him getting his views across.
Will Roger's also had very little evidence however he was not tring to argue a side he was using a logos appeal to reason with everyone. He used the example of Moses in biblical timed and compared him to men in the same position in his day and basically said nothing is going to change in our lifetime, this debate is much older than we are and it will continue long after we are gone, so rest easy because there is nothing that can be done. Go on making your own decisions and don't let others ideas effect you.

Marcus Garvey finds common ground with the Ku Klux Klan. Garvey was a Black leader who believed Blacks should leave America and go go Africa to create their own kingdom. He met with the head of the KKK to discuss their common interests. He under went a lot of scrutiny from other black leaders but using a logos appeal explained that his reason for this meeting was to discover what the KKK's intentions were for the race he represents. What he reported was that the two groups had common interest because his goal is to look out for the Black mans rights while the KKK is looking to protect the intrests of the white man. He uses concession when he says" I am not apologizing for the Klan or endeavoring to excuse the existence of the Klan, but I want a proper understanding about the Ku Klux Klan so that there can be no friction between the Negroes in America and the Ku Klux Klan, because it is not going to help." I like this statement because the logos appeal was very effective on me, his idea is sensible and well thought out.In a sense this a concession and rebuttal all in one statement.

"Theology and Science"
The opening paragraph uses a logos appeal to remind the court that the issue is not that the accused taught the theory of evolution and whether or not that is right or wrong but to remind the court that teaching other than theology in a tax dollar supported institution is against the law. This is a very effective appeal because it brings the whole case back into perspective. A man knowingly broke the law and if he agrees with the teachings of the school or not he still has to abide by the law.

"Abolition of Poverty"
The appeals used here were logos by appealing to the common sense approach to the reality that the we have to make a stand for ourselves, that we can not rely on the government to always keep our best interest at hand. The pathos appeal was also used to appeal the country's love of democracy and free will.

The Curse of God Almighty is on the Saloon

My blog is on William Ashley Billy Sunday’s speech, along with Will Rodgers, and the use of their appeals. First Billy Sunday is using the appeal to character, (ethos)” the man” who asks for personal liberty, to drink freely. Then he instantly turns this to an emotional appeal (pathos) and talks about his long suffering wife and children. He is motivating guilt and sorrow for these people. Not only is he saying that the saloon is the reason for their unpaid bills and neglected children but it is also Gods Worst enemy. He has some really good points, and I believe this is true, along with Will Rodgers and his thoughts on the subject.
Will Rodgers was hearing both sides of the story and just thought of both of them to be a waste of our good time. “Taxes and parking spaces would hit us in the face just the same” he says. In other words, it is no big deal, the sun will still rise and set the same tomorrow. You can count on this. His appeal to reason on this was, we have way more to worry about in the United States then the next mans drink. Let’s go to bed and forget about it.

Prohibition –
Sunday uses all the three devices to appeal to the audience though the effectiveness is questionable. Instead of berating “alcohol” he should preach about alcoholism. By trying to cover all grounds of reason, emotion and logic his speech becomes belabored and loses its edge. He should have stuck to one appeal and made crucial points.
Rogers hits it dead on, he appeals to the “masses” using reasoning (logos) not assuming one person was wet or dry forcing them to look at the situation without “defending” themselves and making the problem worse. Personally I think the answer is “temperance” (self-control or moderation) something the majority of humanity has had problems with whether it is alcohol, food, cigarettes, or sex.

Garvey –
Garvey uses logos appealing to the audience’s reason by recalling dialogue between he and the grand wizard. Reading this back then maybe it would have been shocking but today not so. The black panthers were formed for the interest of the black community like many other civil rights groups. And I'm sure if a “white man” stood in the way of their progression he would be killed, but the truth of the matter is that if “any” man stood in the way of their goals he would have been killed. If men from all ethnicities were to stand in the way of either the Klan or the Panthers they would have been slain. Point is, Garvey’s comparison with the Klan is clear but not effective. I don’t like his argument period.

Man vs. God –
This is a big mess, Jennings uses emotion to appeal to people (Pathos) and in my opinion I don’t find it effective because though he is passionate, science has more readily accessible credibility for argument whether it is true or not is debatable because new “studies and information is found all the time” he should have drawn from biblical verses and history perhaps from a more legal perspective the fact that America was founded as a Christian country and asking a man to allow his children to study the world and follow laws made without the creators’ influence is not likely if not offensive. In short maybe he should have used more of a (logos) perspective considering the playing field.

Dudley on the other hand does use reason (Logos) and is infinitly more effective than Jennings because he is prepared. his topic is pretty easy I must say because if I was solely for science I would have argued the exact way he did. Society is “built” from science for people and he emphasizes this point. Jennings on the other hand should have stopped him there and argued that it “Serves” society and is not a bases for its existence nor do we serve science as he makes it seem. Jennings should have been more familiar with his adversary and said if people were to actually follow Darwinism and live in a kill or be killed society how would that effect us and can that theory alone stand as evidence of existence. In short, Dudley proves his point effective and Jennings fails to convince.

Poverty –
Hoover appeals to the character of the American people (ethos) comparing poverty to communism but he uses a less loaded term “socialism” to combat poverty in America. His speech is effective highlights the problems the society at the time had to work on.

Billy Sunday:
Emotion
-"Saloon is a coward....infidel....liar" = hate for saloon
-"Curse of God Almighty is on the saloon" = fear of damnation
-battered wife and abused children = sympathy for their pain

Will Rogers:
Reason
-The country will continue to run whether prohibition remains or is retracted
-Alcohol has been around since biblical times
-People will do what they want regardless of the laws
-Just talking about it won't solve anything, there must be a resolution agreed upon by both sides

Marcus Garvey:
Reason
-Mentions civilized talks with the KKK
-Leaves emotion out of speech on purpose
-Attempts to logically explain how the KKK's ideals are the same to that of the UNIA

William Jennings Bryan:
Emotion (in reason's clothing)
-Pride = man being the best species, and not being on the same level as "smelly" animals
-Fear = of losing faith in the Bible by teaching that humans descended from animals

Malone:
Reason
-Uses the laws exact words to prove Scope didn't violate it
-Explains that children should be taught all avenues of education in order for them to have open minds
-"Truth is on our side" so he's not afraid

Herbert Hoover:
Reason
-Explains how well our country prospered without the government's help or interference
-Compares the U.S. to other countries and explains why our economy is better ("individualism")
-Claims country will flourish is left in the present state of how things are run
