Anthony Horn:
So the first speech in this weeks reading is given by Shen Tong on the violence crack down in Tiananmen Square. He describes the troubling situation in China with one dynasty taking after another and the violent massacre that took place after protests began to turn violent. He preaches and practices non-violence to try and help better the situation of the Chinese people.
The next speech was given by Senator George F. Hoar denouncing American Imperialism. This speech is about the annex of the Philippines. He speaks out about the irreversible damage we were doing by occupying the Philippines against the will of the people. He speaks about how it is against our countries ideals and how the fighting going on there was strengthening the Filipino’s hate for us and losing/destroying American lives and families.
The next speeches in the reading were by W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. W.E.B. Du Bois' speech, "Battle for Humanity," is about calling out all the practices of the American government and people that go against every thing that we stand for and demanding that things get set right.
Booker T. Washington's speech was more along the lines of damage control. It urges non violence and makes an attempt to clear the anger filled vision of some African Americans.
Mark Twain gives the next speech to a graduating class of young ladies from a girl’s school in Baltimore. This is a humorous speech in which he makes the point that all things in moderation is the lesson that he had to give. That and honesty is the best policy but it is not always going to get you what you need.
The next speech is by Ida B. Wells on lynching. In this speech she speaks out against the atrocities and racially bias practice of lynching in American society. She goes over all the senseless reasons for lynching and the obviously false pretenses for its existence. Despite the obvious ridiculousness of these practices there was never a federal law criminalizing lynching.
The second to final speech was given by Chief Plenty Coup on uniting the great tribes of the US. His speech describes the desecration of his land and people and how he wants nothing more than to meet one last time with the tribes to sit in peace and then part ways forever.
The final speech is by Reverend Reverdy Ransom on "White Supremacy." This is about a boxing match between a white and a black boxer. He uses this match, the white boxers conduct, and the obvious race division it caused to point out that there is going to be this need for the white man to dominate the black man in every thing he does from sports, to music, to art and so on.
Keith Dunng…
I was reading the first speech by Shen Tong about the act of nonviolence in society of China. His thought of nonviolence is the most effective way towards communication. Unfortunately, China is use to violent acts and was disappointed with his rally when they started throwing stone, saying that we are defeating the purpose. China still wait for their day of salvation as they were promised.
In Senator George F Hoar, he gave a speech about the annexation of the Philippines on ‘Denounces American Imperialism’. He believes that we shouldn’t be meddling with their style of government. He fears that other will think the American government is like a meteor crashing down upon them rather than a form o peace. 44 Years later, the Philippines has achieved their independence.
In Booker T. Washington’s speech on “Battle for Humanity”, he explains on how the race of the black African Americans is being discriminated and judgment on who they are and what they represent. It is a battle that they have to face, but in the end, they can foresee the victory that they have been yearning for.
Mark Twains made a short speech about smoking, drinking, and marrying, on not overdoing any of those topics, yet it is okay to do them. Lastly, he mentions the old proverb ‘Honesty is the best policy’ and spoke a short story about him and a dog that he sold to support his idea.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett made a speech about the violent acts of lynching. She feels that as a Christian nation, is this really a Christian way? While researching and witnessing the act of lynching, she would hope that one day, they would make a federal law against lynching.
Chief Plenty Coup of the Crow Nations assembled with the other great chiefs making a speech on how the Native Americans are seeing less and less of their kind due to the Great White Father of Washington. He wants to send his men out calling other great tribes together to hold a grand council for everyone to break bread and smoke their peace pipe to finally say farewell to each other.
Finally, Reverend Reverdy Ransom made a speech on “White Supremacy”. This wasn’t just about the boxing match between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries, boxing was just a taste of what the ‘white supremacy’ is about to face. They cannot remain above the blacks all the time, nor the Japanese, Chinese, or Indians. It is something that they should look past the color of their skin and realize that it is just between human themselves that will receive supremacy and not just pure supremacy upon a specific stereotype.
Tiananmen Square- Shen Tong
This Chinese student tells a gripping tale of how he and his peers were dedicated to non-violent protest against the communist regime. He tells of how their fight for peace turned into a bloody slaughter. His one account of watching his classmate get shot in the face by a soldier and trying to keep the people from killing the soldiers even though they were firing into the crowd is a chilling one, I doubt many people today realize how gruesome war and violence really is until its is on their front door.
American Imperialism- Beveridge- vs. Hoar-
Berveridge wanted to annex the Philippines first, then teach the people how to be more democratic and self-governing. In contrast, Senator Hoar wanted to let the people exercise their own sovereignty and not let American hands interfere.
“Battle” for humanity and Confrontations- W. E. B Boise vs. Booker T. Washington
W. E. B. Dubois encouraged violent militant action for what the African American community needed. Booker T. Washington wanted and encouraged non-violent action for further change, he even went as far as to challenge the “northern” black community to try their radical actions in the heart of the south.
Mark Twain-
Twain insists that the little girls don’t indulge in excesses. He explains the many vices he’s had in his life and provides a testimony. He also gives an example of honesty and perhaps and example of the golden rule (treat others how you would want to be treated) and reinforces trust between Americans.
Ida B. –
Ida speaks about lynching and how this “mob” activity is a “blight” upon American culture and enforces that each individual is apart of the greater whole of America and its authority and rules which are based of Christian principals then loyal to their sub-states.
Chief Plenty Coup-
This was sad. Only in death do the last of this people really commune and enjoy each other. 20 chiefs from the last tribes get together “never to meet again”. Obviously his spirit isn’t exactly broken but he has accepted that the wasn’t they were fighting was not a winning one and before he dies he wanted to sit with all the great chiefs and tribes and have peace once more.
Reverend Reverdy Ransom-
Though it sounded like it, Ransom had no intention on endorsing the fight. He apparently is appalled at the statement the other pastor of the white church made. He then begun to explain that whenever people of diverse ethnic groups prevail in their chosen profession or field they will be fighting against “white supremacy” or at least that’s how southern whites at the time would like to think of it.
Samantha Brick
Senator Beveridge and Senator Hoar:
Senator Beveridge speaks about America being divine and chosen by God to lead the rest of the world into into and civilization. He speaks about it being America's job to promote and create stability and a strong government throughout the world where there is nothing but chaos and barbarianism.
Senator Hoar says that a nation that forces unwelcome change, even on barbarians, is nothing more than a barbarian itself. The world sees America and its flag as a sign of hope and power, but it is on its way to being seen as a sign of terror.
Du Bois and Washington:
Du Bois speaks about the goals of the Niagara Movement. He explains that they want full "manhood" through voting and rights given to them by the Constitution. They want public discrimination to stop, the freedom to choose their own company, the 14th and 15th Amendments enforced, the law to be held up equally to both whites and blacks, and lastly, that blacks have equal education. Du Bois encourages his fellows not to give up, because they are on the side of justice and they will prevail.
Washington says to his people that they should be the ones to show the world how well they abide by and respect the law. He remarks that by becoming criminals, people are creating the image that all blacks are criminals. He goes on to say that black people should not write off all whites as evil and enemies, but rather they should accept those that are their friends and trying to help.
Mark Twain:
Twain tells the school girls what not to do in life. He tells them not to smoke, drink, or marry - in excess. He also tells them honesty is the best policy and to live their lives by that proverb.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett:
Wells talks about how the country is failing itself. With the federal government looking the other way while lynchings continue, she implies that the country is decaying from within. She says that protecting women is an unjust excuse for these cruel acts. And she calls for the federal government to enforce the state laws when they don't do so themselves. She wants the government to take control so the senseless murders will stop being committed.
Chief Plenty Coup:
The Chief has come to the realization that the white men will soon kill the rest of his people and take their land. He does not wish to fight anymore, but instead to have one last council with the other tribes. He orders invitations to be sent to all the other tribes in an effort to spend one last, great night together as brothers.
Reverend Ransom:
The Reverend speaks about how this upcoming boxing match is merely another fight to Johnson; the better man will win. But to Jefferies and all the white people, it has somehow become an attempt to retain white supremacy. The Reverend goes on to say that if the white rule can be challenged in the boxing ring, then blacks who become poets, or sculptors or excel in sciences or other studies will challenge the white supremacy in those areas as well. He finishes by saying that this long battle will keep the whites occupied for a long time.

-Shen Tong's speech on the violent crackdown in Tiananmen Square. Shen describes his horrible story that occured in China. Following Dr. Martin Luther Kings Jr.'s teachings, Shen expresses his emotions and beliefs supporting nonviolent actions.
-Albert J. Beveridge vs Senator George F. Hoar on American Imperialism. Beveridge was highly determined to apply American administration to the Philippines. George F Hoar on the other hand, was against imperialism. He did not want the Philippines governed against their own will.
-W.E.B.Du Bois & Booker T. Washington. Both fighting for racial justice, W.E.B. Du Bois demanded equallity and the right to vote. Booker T. was more on the nonviolent peaceful side. He Beleived in self-control and calmness. He also gives alot of credit to some of the white people "as he calls them," for support.
-Mark Twain's sppech on Smoking, Drinking, and Lying. Without too much seriousness, he gives advice to the young ladies about what not to do. He gives a very effective short story at the end of his speech about his honesty.
-Ida B. Wells-Barnett on Lynching. After her closest friend was lynched, Wells-Barnett set out to stop the horor. She wanted justice to play its part and put a halt on all this reasonless murders, although never succeeding on an antilynching law.
-Cheif Plenty Coup and his gathering of Great Tribes. Realizing his people where slowly decreasing, Cheif Plenty Coup of the Crow Nation wanted all tribes to meet together and smoke the peace pipe as friends and brothers to say farewell for the last time.
-Reverend Reverdy Ransom on White Supremacy. He doesn't speak so much about the fight itself. He speaks on white and black supremacy. Boxing is a blind sport and sees no color, the best fighter wins regaurdless of hue. The Reverends message was one of good spirit, and good sportmanship.
_Blog/weektwo
Shen Tong_
The first speech was by Shen Tong, a Chinese student who spoke about his use of non-violence throughout China. He tells about a time where he was involved in a non-violent protest, which actually developed into a fairly violent conflict, and his struggle to maintain the teachings and philosophies of his non-violent beliefs. Following the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Ghandi, Tong feels like non-violence is the answer to China’s ongoing issues with violent dynasty’s trying to control China, and ultimately failing in the end.
Beveridge & Hoar_
Senator Albert J. Beveridge and Senator George F. Hoar speak about American imperialism and the annexation of the Philippines. Bereridge thought America had been blessed as the “master organizer,” and had the ability to establish structure and order in a country that was felt was occupied by “savage” people. Hoar felt as though it was up to the people themselves to establish a government, create principles, and organize authority on their own, as many republics around the world did, including America.
Du Bois & Washington_
The third set of speeches read was from W.E.B. Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. Du Bois spoke about having equal rights for all people, regardless of their ethnical background. He wanted to see things such as the right to vote and equal educational opportunities for all people. Washington spoke about a non-violent and sensible way to change some of the racial issues going on in the South. He believed that not all white men should be looked at as enemies, and that there is a difference in class among his own race also.
Mark Twain_
In this speech Mark Twain speaks to an audience of young ladies graduating from school. It is very brief, but tells them things not to take into excess, like smoking and drinking. Then tells a short story about a time where he found that honesty was truly the best policy, and how it’s affected his life.
Ida B. Wells_
Wells speaks about the government not enforcing state laws and how lynchings are still allowed to continue without interference or punishment. She feels as though it is a blemish upon our nation, a mockery of our laws, and disgracing towards Christianity.
Chief Plenty Coup_
Chief Plenty Coup speaks about the last assembly of the tribes and what he considers “the greatest event of his life.” Coming to terms that his land was going to be overtaken, Chief Plenty Coup organizes a meeting to unite all the tribes, for one last final peace gathering.
Reverend Reverdy Ransom_
Reverend Reverdy Ransom speaks about an upcoming boxing match between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries. Since Jeffries was white and Johnson was black, rumours started to circulate about Jeffries not only fighting for the championship, but to pretty much represent white peoples supremacy in the sport. Ransom gives great examples how every man, regardless of color, has just an equal of an opportunity as the next to excel in any occupation or sport.
Starr Keichler:
Shen Tong is a student in Beijing who belived in peaceful protest for civil rights in China. He gathered together with a group of fellow students who's thoughts were in alighment with one another and their vision for a peaceful revolution for the people of China. The students took every percaution possible to ensure a peaceful demonstration however the people of China became involved and lost contol of their emotions as well as the vision of peace and became violent with the soldiers. The soldiers responded with force and massicured many. Shen Tong still stands on the side of peace.
Senator George F. Hoar Denounces American "Imperialism". He tells about the annex of the Phillapines. He speaks out against Imperialism and the strong concerns he has about the American Govt' doing more harm than good and reuining our reputation as a Country almost as if we were abusing our power and using a strong arm in a place we had no business.
W.E.B Du Bois and Booker T. Washington. The first speech, "Battle for Humanity" is about the black man speeking out and demanding the human rights that are stated in our Constitution. The second speech is is along the same lines but gives a more clear outline to the African American people on how they should go about demanding peacefully for what is theirs in order to create change in a peaceful way. The overall message was on how we need to stand and create unity and equality for all people.
Mark Twain spoke to the graduating class at an all girls school in Baltimore. He shared form life experience and gave the girls 3 guidelines by which to live their lives in order to live with honor and respect. The overall message was not do to do anything in excess and to always be honest regardless of the situation.
Ida B. Wells-Barnett on "Mob Murder" in America. She tells a story of the lack of accountability by the people who are lynching others with no evidence and often for no reason. She gives proof of 285 lynchings over a ten year period, the reasons were unsubstanciated and unlawful. The people cry out for a country that embrasses the "law of the Land" to protect the innocent and punish men who break the law.
Chief Plenty Crop calls together the many Indian Tribes for the last time to celebrate together before the white man wipes out their people. The Chief declares "we are like birds with a broken wing" with this statement he is saying the white man's weapons are far more advanced and we are out numbered. It was time to bring peace to the Indian people.
Reverend Reverdy Ransom on "White Supremacy". He tells a story of an up comming boxing match between Jack Johnson and Jim Jefferies but he tells the story in the form of an antedote. The match up between the two boxers is a symbol of the fight lead by the darker races against the white man for equality. As if to win the match is the begining of the darker race saying to the white man you are not superior to me nor were you ever and this metephore is just the begining of me showing you why this statement is true.
Tyler Bradley Week2 04/13/08
-Shen Tong's -
Shen Tong, a peace seeking china man, describes his lives events, which would lead him into his following of Dr. Martin Luther King Jar’s teachings on radical change with nonviolent solutions.
-Senator Beveridge VS Senator Hoar-
Beveridge believed that America was perfect, chosen by god himself to be such a perfect nation, and that Americas principles should stand for all countries around the world, so as to better the world as a hole. On the other side of that, Hoar found that America a young and inexperienced nation should not put it self on such a high pedestal, that a nation who would force its beliefs on even the most barbaric of countries is nothing more than a barbarian it self.
-Du Bois & Booker T. Washington-
Booker T. Washington spoke of equality without hatred, that the only way to gain equality for the African people as a hole, is to show every one that blacks can be a normal citizens, and can follow and abide by normal laws as any man can. Du Bois comes from a much more harsh angle, he speaks about entitlement and the pride of the black community. Du Bois calls out for reform and also lashes out towards public discrimination.
-Mark Twain -
Twain gives a speech on what exactly a school girl should not do in life, with a almost humorous yet obviously serious tone. He also gives examples of what a school girl should do in life.
-Ida B. Wells-Barnett-
Wells tells a story of her close friend, and the horrific indecencies of a murder without repercussions, but that murder or lynching of any kind should be stopped. She goes on to state that it’s the government’s duty to protect its citizens, when the state fails to.
-Chief Plenty Coup-
Chief in a time of war, come to realize that his people will soon be driven from there land, and he no longer wishes to fight, so he sends a message to all the other tribes, so that they mite spend there last day together as brothers, instead of fighting a losing battle to the death.
-Reverend Ransom-
Reverend Ransom is a boxer in a fight against white supremacy or so it seems, that the whites behind Johnson are white supremacy it self. To Reverend Ransom if this were the case and that white supremacy could be beaten with just a boxing match or a test of brains, skill, speed, talent, ex. Then black would challenge whites in all such fights, and that the whites would have a long fight ahead of them.
Lai Saelee:
Shen Tong violent crackdown in Tiananmen Square, China.
Shen Tong speaks about nonviolence and follows Dr. Kings and Mahatma Gandhi's teaching of nonviolence. He speaks about Chang An Avenue which is nick named the Bloody Alley and his encounter of an act of nonviolence gone bad.
Beveridge and Hoar
Beveridge speaks about annexation of the philippines and Hoar with the opposition to american annexation of the Philippines and other territories.
Du Bois and Washington
Both Gentlemen speaking about wanting to be equal and the right to vote. Du bois supported violent actions and Washington supported non-violent actions.
Mark Twain
Twain speaks to an audience of young ladies graduatin from Misses Tewksbury's School in Baltimore. He addresses to the ladies of what not to do like don't smoke, don't drink, and don't marry in excess. He also, talks about honesty and talked about a short story of himself being honest.
Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells began a national crusade against lynching after her closest friends was lynched. She spoke of mob murder in a Cristian nation and wanted a federal anti-lynching law, but the law was never enacted.
Chief Plenty Coup
Chief Plenty Coup has witnessed for decades the forced removal of Native Americans from their homes. He realizes that soon the white people will take over and wants all his people and other tribes to join him in one last meeting/feast. This last meeting was known as "Last Great Indian council" and He remarked as "the greatest event of my life".
Reverend Reverdy Ransom
Reverend Reverdy Ransom speaks about White supremacy.Boxers Jack Johnson(black) and Jim Jeffries(white)and the remarks of Mr. Trimbell. This remark made an issue that Jeffreies must regain white supremacy by defeating Johnson in the ring. Ransom speaks of, if this was the case then the negro poet, artist, sculptor, or musician seeks to realize his conception, the white race would be called to regain its supremacy. Ransom believes that this simply a case of one man meeting another in the boxing ring and the best man wins.
P.4 Senator Albert J. Beveridge January 9, 1900
The Senator speaks to the ego of man by glorifying the act of taking away the rights of the people in the Philippines. He states that it is God’s will that the U.S. maintains the obligation to regenerate the people of the Philippines. If the U.S. leaves the people to their devices they will regress into savages and the world will end (paraphrasing). By constantly planting the idea that the American people are God’s chosen people he is basically telling the President that by not siding with him the people of America are forsaking God’s divine will and hence forsaking God himself. For a time when people were fiercely religious the thought of forsaking God was not a favorable one. So the good Senator used the fears of the people of the time to persuade them to side with him, and by doing so he also stated that it is the way of the future.
P.6 Senator George F. Hoar May, 1902
The Senator speaks in a way that reminds those who have forgotten the ways of America. He states the noble deeds that have been done and then condones the act of taking over a country. He speaks to shame the ideas of trying to forcefully implement ideals upon a people that were originally willing to adopt them in the first place. In his attempt to shame these deeds he persuades those listening to stop such destructive actions and take on more noble “practical statesmanship” and better “sentimentalities”. Though you can massage the ego, ultimately a person never wants to be called evil or bad.
P. 17 W.E.B. Du Bois October 16, 1859
Du Bois speaks as a man that is angry with the injustices his race faces. He bases his speech off of the act of doing the right thing. Using the example of John Brown and his soldiers he states that doing the right thing should be an act of righteousness not damnation. He lists out the things they want done and the right they want bestowed. He then states what will be done until these rights are achieved they will be persistent and forever agitating. He aims to speak to the people in power but his speech seems rough in it vocabulary. He seems to be speaking more to the general public and to his fellow peers in the black community rather than to the audiences of congress and other offices. It would have been better received in my opinion if he spoke to the audience he was trying to address rather than speaking to the community and addressing his audience. This may not have been his intention and in doing so may inadvertently rally more troops behind his cause but the angle of action could in my opinion have been better played.
P. 20 Booker T. Washington October 11, 1906
I personally like Booker T. Washington’s speech of the betterment of his people. In my opinion this speech is no less important today than it was then. He chooses to guild and glorify the meaning of his people by acts of peace and brotherhood. He states that to better harmonize the two races and cement them the people of the North and South should act as one and act like the citizens they wish to one day become. By rising up against the white suppressors they will only be treated like criminals and in doing so will only hurt the cause of their brethren. He means to use the laws that work against his people to their advantages. By becoming law abiding citizens and rising up as one their voices will be better receipted as people rather than savages or criminals.
P.21 Mark Twain
It is kind of funny Twain’s speech to the girls of Misses Tewksbury’s School in Baltimore. He speaks of the things they should not do but in doing so tells of the things he did which act against his former statement. Even still more amusing is his policy on don’t do this, that is to say, not to excess. So in Mr. Twain’s mind it is fine to live your life to the fullest, just not to excess. This is a good policy as: lust; gluttony; greed; sloth; wrath; envy; and pride are all sins of excess. It is when we live to excess that other act excessive towards us, excess breeding excess. He states that by living your life to the fullest and no more ,”you will have all the virtues that anyone will honor and respect”.
P.22 Ida B. Wells-Barnett 1909
Ida B. Wells-Barnett is clearly an educated person, proved through her speech which is more laid out like a essay then other speeches previously read. She understands the topic, fights against it fiercely, and is perfectly able to present the fact which protect her beliefs. She fights against lynching and states that the terrible act is enacted upon more black people than white people. She then backs this fact up by providing facts like the number of total lynchings in comparison to the number of black lynchings. The she states that on top of this more black men are lynched due to false accusations of women crimes. She also backs these facts up by giving the facts of how many black men are lynched and for what reason, also given is the event in Springfield, Illinois.
P.25 Chief Plenty Coup
Chief Plenty Coup used events of the past to solidify his visions of the future. In doing so he persuaded the chiefs of more than twenty other tribes to convene for the last council of the tribes. He stated that the race of the Native Americans was a dying race. The white man was far superior in medicine, horses, and arms for the natives to fight anymore. So in light of this idea he asked his fellow chiefs to lay down their arms and remove their war paint and come together for one last great meal, together as Indians. It was the crowning achievement of his life.
P.26 Reverend Reverdy Ransom
The Reverend Reverdy Ransom aims to slay the deadly words of Reverend John Hamilton Timbrell/Trimbell (the book lists both). This is your classic display of excessive action against excessive beliefs. As a reverend Timbrell/Trimbell is a disgrace to the cloth, likewise the fighter Jack Johnson was foolish to take on the white world heavyweight champion in a time of such racial tolerance unease. This is the point of Ransom’s address though he stated more in the opinion that there will always and forever be those of other color and race oppose to white that will step forward and challenge the race lines. It is to the betterment of the white race that they do not fight back to regain the white supremacy and instead choose to embrace the successes of their fellow human beings.
P.385 Shen Tong January 13, 1990
Though his English may be broken Shen Tong’s beliefs and ideas are clear. He speaks to fight with non-violence and uses the examples of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. He asks for the help from the audience to educate him in the fight for freedom. He seems sure in his ideals of peaceful protest but doesn’t seem to fully understand what he wants. He feels that his confusion is a direct reflection of the feelings and thoughts of the Chinese people. He states without the knowledge of where to go, knowing how to go is of little relevance. His words are dynamic and the stories of his fellow students are emotional.
Humberto M Martinez
Senator George F. Hoar
He states that America is the country who by our great standers should help other countries follow our path. A path that we at first need to meddle in ad help them get there. But. Meddling in other countries can be considered to be a wrong thing to do. it’s a thought that Americas should leave other countries deal with there own legal system and have them perfect it to their ways.
Broker T. Washington
From his writing Broker makes it clear that both black and white should unite and be apart of brotherhood. By doing so this will help stop discrimination, and set an example to others and future generations. That there shouldn’t be any separation between the south and north, for there differences in education and life style. Be one and make our society a better place for all to live.
Mark Twain
This writing is about words of experience in which he is passing down as an advice for girls to follow and that is to not smoke, drink, and marry to excess. That things should be done at a moderate manner, and by doing so one would live a happier life. And last words, are that honesty is the best policy.
Ida B. Well
Lynching was an act that was not taken seriously in the past as records had showed through out America’s history. Ida explains were these facts are coming from and provides evidence as to how this was a part of history back then in America. Solutions to stop this was to an appeal to law, in which all that broke the laws should be punished for there crime.
Chief Plenty Coup
Is a writing describing the life that once existed in the United States before it was taken over. The life of the Native Americans (NA). It is a writing describing the way of life for the NA in which talks about how the land used to be, animals, culture once flourished yet it is banishing now. A wish of a final council to come to hand and for that time for all his people rejoice to there culture for one last time.
The Reverend Reverdy Ransom
This is a writing of an upcoming match of boxing in which with it comes the battle of power between the whites(Jim Jeffries) and the blacks ( Jack Johnson). In this battle it is a test of who is better, and that with such match there will always be a hunger for power to show what race is better. Stating that the white race will be busy for many years as it will be busy trying to defend the interest in white supremacy.
On January 9, 1900 Senator Albert J Beveridge spoke about the Philippines belonging to the United States. The Filipinos natives rebelled because they did not want the U.S. taking over their land. Beveridge says “We will not abandon our opportunity in the Orient.”
Du Bois “Battle for Humanity” Du Bois was speaking for the black people. He was trying to gain equal rights for them. He wants discrimination to stop, he wants everyone to walk and talk as they please, he was asking for education for the children, and justice for everyone.
Mark Twain’s speech to me meant nothing but hypocrisy.
Iba B Wells spoke on mob lynching, and her anger towards them. In ten years time 959 people were lynched, only 102 of them were white. She says “No other nation, civilized or savage, burns its criminals; only under that Stars and Stripes is the human holocaust possible.”
Chief Plenty Coup spoke on losing their land. But before I read this one I received this email that tells what they did with the Indians land: WHERE DID THE WHITE MAN GO WRONG?
Indian Chief 'Two Eagles' was asked by a white government official, 'You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done.'
The Chief nodded in agreement.
The official continued, 'Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong? ‘
The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied. 'When white man find land, Indians running it, no taxes, no debt, plenty buffalo, plenty beaver, clean water.
Women did all the work, Medicine man free. Indian men spend all day hunting and fishing; all night having sex.'
Then the chief leaned back and smiled 'Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that.'
Reverand Reverdy Ransom on “White Supremacy.” Jim Jeffries (a White Supremes) was challenged by a black man to a fight (Jack Johnson). Jeffries refused. But to prove himself to White Supremes he had to fight and defeat Johnson. They finally stood toe to toe and Johnson prevailed.
Shen Tong was speaking on peace for China. “To fight without fighting” he says, “that is the razors edge of non-violence.” He thinks China and their people have suffered long enough and are just looking for harmony amongst their land.
On Senator Albert J. Beveridge and Senator Hoar. Denounces American "Imperialism.
"To Annex the Philippines. This talks about America promoting a strong government and stability. Trying to rip away a peoples way of life. Its better not to interfere. You cannot deprive people of their rights; if you do you are just as much a barbarian as they are. The Philippines gained their independence 44 years later in 1946.
W.E.B. Du Bois And Booker T. Washington

In the first speech of this week’s reading President Woodrow Wilson expresses his lack of enthusiasm for making war with Germany but outlines its necessity. He explains that we have no quarrel with the people of Germany but with its government which made the decisions, taking innocent American lives at sea, that have lead to the need for American intervention. He goes on to clarify that we are not in this for revenge, or to exercise or physical power, “but only the vindication of right, of human right, of which we are only a single champion.”
The next speech is given by Carrie Chapman Catt on women’s suffrage. In this speech she goes over how ridiculous it is that women do not have the right to vote pointing out that women are just as much a part of this country as men. They teach in our schools where young boys learn about the government from women so that they can be educated voters, they are lawyers in our courts of law, and the most obvious problem is that they are not being represented because they cannot vote for their representatives therefore they are being denied one of the rights that was the foundation for the creation of our great nation. She goes on to punk the old timers that are against women’s suffrage and state that their right to vote was imminent and that the members of congress had the choice of helping or hindering but they were not going to be able to stop it.
The next speech is Wilson again on his “Fourteen Points” for world peace. Each point covers a way better the people of the world and of the recently war riddled nations of Europe. Such things as diplomatic public relations between countries, the removal of economic barriers, the evacuation and restoration of invaded territories, freedom, and safe access to certain needs like access to the ocean for land locked nations. The overall idea of this speech is to create international justice, freedom, and safety.
Wilson’s speech is followed by a very short and blunt speech by Ambassador James W. Gerard. This speech from our German Ambassador sheds light on the fact that we are the only country with a large population of people from the country we were at war with, that they have impressed him with their allegiance, and that treason would not be tolerated. He even went so far as to repeat some dialog between him and the German Ambassador about how there were 500,000 German reservists in America and how we have 500, 001 lamp posts from which they would hang if they ever rose up against the country that embraced them.
The second to final speech of this week’s reading is from Reverend Dr. Anna Howard Shaw supporting President Wilson’s proposal for the League of Nations. This speech is to the American people but geared toward women. She explains how a league of nations could solve or prevent many of the world’s problems, such as war, disease, and international cooperation. She does a lot of dividing decisions and ways of thinking into either men’s or women’s. She almost get’s to the point of saying that there would be no war if women were calling the shots.
The last speech is by Henry Cabot Lodge against the League of Nations. He feels that we should be an independent nation and not involve our ideals and policies in foreign affairs. He points out that we have plenty of problems to solve at home and we would be better fit to serve to world if we tended to our own problems before entering into an international political circle with all sorts of conflicting ideals and interests.
I chose to talk about Carrie Chapman Catt's fight for Woman suffrage. She states that women of the time are not receiving the same suffrage that men get. She goes even further to say that even men of other races receive more suffrage than that of women, with the exception of slaves and criminals. In a time when minorities were not treated as equals this makes a strong statement. She says women deserve just as many rights as men, and to pronounce her point further she quotes the American Revolutionists, "Taxation without Representation is Tyranny". To prove her point she uses the example of women teacher whom educate the men that then go into politics. She makes this point because if the men are suitable for just suffrage than so should be the women who educate them. One could say that if the women feel that they are in such a position of power as to form the minds of the future men of office then they hold it in themselves the power to change the problem of suffrage. The problem with that idea is most men of that time liked their women subservient to them. Whence the boys that were educated grew up they joined the men and did as men do and grew accustomed to the subservience of women. Thus, what little power women had in the education process was striped away from them by the re-education of the boys peers found in men.
