For my Toulmin method analysis I decided to analyze the speech of Ambassador James W. Gerard.
Claim: "we must disappoint the Germans who have always believed that the German Americans here would risk their property, their children's future, and their own neck and take up arms for the Kaiser."
Qualifier: "Americans." He is limiting the subject of his speech to Germans living here in America.
Exceptions: "And if there are any German Americans here who are so ungrateful for all the benefits they have received that they are still for the Kaiser, there is only one thing to do with them."
Reason 1: The first reason was stated in the claim sentence; the fact that German Americans are not about to risk their families, possessions, and freedoms for a country that they left behind. This reason is relevant because these are the things that most people value over loyalty to their country. This reason is effective because it makes any German American thinking about becoming a traitor start thinking about the safety of themselves and their families. There evidence for this reason is that they came to America to have these things and why would they give it up for a country that they left behind. This is logical evidence. The proof is the fact that they are here.
Reason 2: "...There is no animal that bites and kicks and squeals and scratches, that would bite and squeal and scratch equal to a fat German American, if you commenced to tie him up and told him that he was on his way back to the Kaiser." This reason is relevant because we treat them good here and they obviously left their fatherland for a reason. This reason is effective in making it seem like the German Americans here would do anything to stay right where they are at and that they are not fond of Germany. This reason is effective because it paints a very vivid picture in your head. There is no real evidence to support this reason because it is a hypothetical statement.
Anticipated Objection: The objection in this speech came from a story where he describes some dialogue between him and the German Ambassador. The Ambassador says that there are 500,000 German reservists in our country that would rise up against us if we ever went to war with them.
Rebuttal: His rebuttal to this statement was that there are 500,001 lamp posts in America and the reservist would be hanging from them the day after the up rise.
Come prepared on Monday to share your logic exercises and we will put them to the test. Don't forget, you will be presenting your short-term and long-term career goals and steps to achieving them. I look forward to hearing all about it!
Great job on the Toulmin method, Anthony. Looking forward to seeing additional posts.
N.Y Governor Alfred E. Smith Claim: “I cannot think of a more contemptible man. My power of imagination fails to bring into my minds eye a more despicable man than the man that exploits the poor.”
Qualifier: “Despicable men, Alfred limits his argument to the various types of evil men, not all men.”
Exceptions: Alfred brings all men back into the analysis and gives character types of such despicable men “If” there are any more despicable than Randolph Hearst. “Any man that leads you to believe that your lot in life is not all right, any man that conjures up for you a fancied grievance against your government or against the man at the head of it, to help himself, is breeding the seeds of anarchy.”
Reason#1: Second paragraph, “follow back the history of this man’s newspaper from when he first came to this part of the country and you will have read out a remarkable fact….No public man from Grover Cleveland right down to today as ever escaped this fellow.” This has great relevance to Alfred’s argument because Hearst makes his living “smearing” people who are in office to do good for society. Smith is insinuating that no man is perfect for if they were they would surly escape the slanderous tabloids of Hearst.
Reason#2: Third paragraph, “Nobody has ever went to the governor’s office went there with a graver sense of responsibility of that office than I did. What could there possibly be about me that I should be assailed in this reckless manner by this man.” Very important, Smith holds himself in such high regard he dares people by begging the question… “What could I have possibly done?” this makes him look like he has nothing to hide and furthers his argument against Hearst making Hearst look like he’s on a witch-hunt.
Anticipated Rebuttals: “Nobody has ever gone to the governor’s office went there with a graver sense of responsibility of that office than I did. What could there possibly be about me that I should be assailed in this reckless manner by this man.” This is also the challenge, Smith dares people to dig up any dirt they can find in defense of whatever claims Hearst has spouted.
Rebuttals: There were no Rebuttals, matter of fact Hearst didn’t even show up to the debate making his argument even more credible and effective.
Humberto Martinez I just finished reading “League of Nations”. Hopefully I respond to this assignment well.
The Claim, from what I got from reading this is that woman have made an important impact in our country helping us achieve victory in seeking piece with other nations. A piece that would make other nations accepting of one another for there differences.
Reasons/facts: Some of the reason that were thrown out to back up this claim were. Since most of the men in this country were in the military fighting , they needed help in constructing ammo, weapons, and other items for them to use in battle. Great number of people were needed during that hard time in battle that as many American woman decided to help the nation. They offered there help not only to win war but to end a war for good. By demonstrating the fact that we were at war to help other countries with out asking a reward was demonstrating how much we wanted piece. With such act came respect from others countries in which helped achieve great relationships with the U.S. Thus form the League of Nations that will help aid other countries in there worst to show humanity that we are one.
Objection/Rebuttal: Is that the League of nation is a form of unity for help, but to also count the word of men and woman for they are the ones that will accept actions from the League of Nations. Thus for embrace a change if accepted by those who want it. With senators having our voice spoken and what we want is a way of communication and with that comes our thoughts of the issues that are in current time. One will argue if the League of Nations is really a way of helping others by there methods, that is why there are actions made to help show what they are all about.
Woman, and Men of this country have made a big change in other countries as well as ours. By seeking piece we form a League of Nations were we all trust for them to help and keep peace with every country. sacrifices have been made and with them comes the end result of what we have now.
Starr Claim: Alfred E. Smith the Goventor of New York has challenged William Randolph Hearst to a debate and it beging with "I can not think of a more contemptiple man. Qualifier: He suggests that of all the radicals, anarchist and socialists who have planted seeds of discord among a community they are at least sincere in their own heart. then he says"He may think he is right when he preaches it." then he goes on to suggest that Hearst is using his position as a platform "to destroy, as he said himself he would, the govenor of the state, is a man as low and as mean as I can picture... Exceptions: "My power of imagination fails to bring to mind a more despicable man than the man who exploits the poor." He leaves a window open by saying he can not recall a more despicable man careful not to say is the worst. Reason#1 "Smith suggests we follow back in history and look at the Hearst publication and find that every man elected into office somehow had his name drug thru the mud by Hearst's newspaper . What makes this reason effective: He suggests that if the Hearst newspapers were the text books for children of our schools, they would have to spell out of it's every line that no man can be trusted in this country after he is put into public office..." What evidence supports this reason? "About that there can be no question, because no public man in this state, from Grover Cleveland right down to today, has ever escaped this fellow. We all know that. The childern on the streets know it." Is evidence sufficient: He gives resources such as the publication that can be researched but he does not quote specific quotes from Hearst. Although I still feel upon further discovery of the newspapers contient that his accusation are crediable, sufficient and accurate. Especially when he uses the example of even the children knowing that Hearst is a name basher, makes him even more crediable. Objection: There is none because Hearst did not show up for the debate.
Declaration of War Against Germany By President Woodrow Wilson
The Claim: Because of the hostile attack against the Americans, the Germans knew the consequences for their actions.
The Qualifier: Disastrous, extraordinary, neutrality, profound, many months, we are but one.
The Exceptions: “and that it take immediate steps not only to put the country in a more thorough state of defense, but also to exert all its power and employ all its resources to bring the government of the German Empire the term and end war…”
Reason 1: “American ships have been sunk, American lives taken in ways which it has stirred us very deeply to learn of, but the ships and people of other neutral and friendly nations have been sunk and overwhelmed in the waters in the same way.” It reminded me in the battle of Pearl Harbor and the 9-11 where American ground/water where attacked not under the engagement of war. Therefore the opposing forces are starting the engagement and getting a head start.
Reason 2: “We are now about to accept the gage of battle with this natural foe to liberty and shall, if necessary, spend the whole force of the nation to check and nullify its pretensions and its power.” The phrase, “Accept the gage of battle”, always has this chill on my spine to know that war is about to be engage. Not saying that war is a bad thing, but the idea that the moment of peace and living day to day lives suddenly alters into a battle between nations. Like this American dream has just melted and suddenly fighting for our rights to live and for others to live our future American dream.
The Objection/Rebuttal: “We are but one of the champions of the right of mankind.” I feel that this can be objective because America is not the world police. Everyone has their own ways and believes in their own thing. The best way to solve a conflict with other nations is to understand them, not as just a human being, but their history, culture, and their reasoning.
I am writing about Carrie Chapman Catt and her speech on women suffrage. I thought this was a great argument. Claim: The tyrant males who believed women were given their places already. Qualifier: All women in the states that did not have the right to vote. Exceptions: The men who did not validate this kind of justice. Which she did not believe there were any. Her argument was that Uncle Sam takes millions of dollars in tax money from women, of who teach these men everything they know, but they (women) are not worthy to vote. Women were begging for rights from uneducated males for their political freedom. She explains it best when she says, “It is a death grapple between the forces which deny and those which uphold the truths of the Declaration of Independence.” She says towards the end “women suffrage is coming and you know it.” And she asks them “fight with us.”
President Woodrow Wilson requests a Declaration of war against Germany.
CLAIM: "There is such a thing as a nation being so right that it does not need to convince others by force."
QUALIFIER: Because German U-Boats sank American ships action will have to be taken
Exceptions: We dont have to fight if we try and work something out.
Reason 1: "We have no quarrel with the German people." This reason is relevant because if we have no problems with them then we shouldn't want to have a war. This reason is effective because war gets you no where and it only causes more problems. Evidence that supports this is, "It was not with their previous knowledge or approval. It was a war determined upon as wars used to be determined upon in the old, unhappy days..." The evidence is credible, sufficent, and accurate because war is not good for a country or state unless something is gained.
Reason 2: "...fight thus for the ultimate peace of the world and for the liberation of its peoples..." They re fighting for a good cause. It's effective because they are doing what's needed to improve the state of happiness.Support of reason "The world must be made safe for democracy. Its peace must be planted upon the tested foundations of political liberty." This is credible because once again they are just trying to make it better.

Ambassador James W. Gerard's speech:
Claim: German Americans support America in the war against Germany.
Qualifier: "great majority"
Exceptions: Those German Americans who are traitors.
Reason: the German Americans do not want to return to their Fatherland.
Relevance?: the oppression and harsh conditions the faced in Germany.
Effective?: invokes fear of Germany's rule.
Evidence: 500,00 Germans who immigrated from Germany to America.
Sufficient?: only one major evidence used, and then fear as a substitute for more evidence ("if...then")
Credible?: American ambassador is a reliable source.
Accurate?: amount was probably fairly statistically correct.
